The county was named after General Richard Butler, who battled for territory in the Northwest Indian war. The current county seat for Butler County is Hamilton.

Court Resources in Butler County, Ohio

Butler County Area Courts I II & III – The Butler County Area courts oversees the majority of misdemeanor cases and traffic violations. They also handle domestic violence instances, people accused of operating a vehicle intoxicated (OVI) or civil actions up to $15,000. Each court has it’s own judge with Judge Robert H. Lyons appointed to Area I, Kevin C McDonough to Area II and Daniel E. Haughey assigned to the Area III court.

Court of Common Pleas in Butler County – The Court of Common Pleas manages felony and certain misdemeanor trial cases for Butler County. The court is divided into separate divisions to efficiently handle cases. These divisions include the general division, domestic relations division, juvenile division and probate division. There are currently 7 active judges on Butler County’s Court of Common Pleas docket.

Butler County’s Prosecutor’s Office – The current elected prosecutor for Butler County is Michael T. Gmoser. Attorney Gmoser is responsible for defending the state of Ohio against all felony cases. The office also advises law enforcement and assists with criminal investigations.

Supreme Court of Ohio – The highest court in Ohio is the Supreme Court. They have final authority over all interpretations of the law and Ohio constitution. Most cases sent to the Supreme Court are appellate ones that have been appealed multiple times. The current Chief Justice for Butler County is Maureen O’Connor who was sworn in 2009.

Butler County’s Sheriff’s Office – The Butler County’s Sheriff’s office enforces Ohio’s rules and laws throughout the state and on its highways. The current elected sheriff is Richard K. Jones who was elected in 2004 and has stayed on the force for three terms.

Hamilton City Police Department – The Hamilton Police Department provides police service to the citizens of Hamilton. They patrol Hamilton streets to ensure the resident’s safety as well as providing community services. The current Chief of Police for the department is Craig Burcheit.

Ohio State Highway Patrol – The Highway Patrol is a division of the Ohio Department of Public Safety. They protect Butler County and other Ohio county highways through effective policing and promotion of traffic safety. The current Superintendent for the Highway Patrol is Colonel Richard S Fambro who was sworn in March 2019.
